How To Adopt

The heart of Catholic Charities’ adoption program is twofold: concern for the family struggling with an untimely pregnancy and concern for the family who wishes to adopt. At Catholic Charities, we believe that every adoption should center on meeting the needs of the child. Adoption is a lifelong commitment involving birth parents and adoptive parents, adoptive children and extended families. Catholic Charities is an advocate of open adoption.

Services are provided to a variety of faith traditions, races, and ethic/national origins.  Families are considered for adoption on a case-by-case basis; however, we cannot guarantee anyone a placement. The birth parents select the adoptive family themselves. Many factors can influence the waiting period, some beyond anyone’s control. For example, the number of birth mothers considering adoption, or the prospective adoptive family’s personal preferences may impact the waiting period.

We have found that birth families carefully choose their child’s adoptive families. By the time the birth occurs, the adoptive families and birth parents have already formed a caring relationship. However, sometimes the birth mother calls our agency late in the pregnancy, or even directly from the hospital, permitting little time for the usual relationship building. In those cases, the relationship is built following the child’s birth.
